usher guidelines

Thank you for your willingness to serve as an usher. You are one of the first impressions for those coming to Harbert Community Church.
Your role is to make everyone feel safe and as comfortable as they can during this time.

PRIOR TO THE SERVICE

•   Please arrive by 9:30.

•   Bring your happy, smiling face and pick up your name tag, which will in the Usher Cabinet. (As you walk in the sanctuary, it’s a screened cabinet on the left wall.)

•   Light all the candles in the front of the sanctuary.

•   Two ushers greet and pass out bulletins at the double doors and one at the single door.

•   Be familiar with the location of the restrooms and the AED (defibrillator). If someone needs the assistance of the Hearing Loop, tell someone in the sound booth and bring them to that person.

•   The musical notes should be near the bulletins if anyone asks for them.

WELCOMING

•   While passing out bulletins and welcoming guests, please show your love for Jesus.

•   Keep the main sanctuary doors open throughout the service, but close the single door.

DURING THE SERVICE

•   Recognize that some may arrive after the service has begun, especially newcomers, please have at least one usher remain in the back throughout the first service. Some guests may arrive even 20 minutes late, and we want to make sure that everyone feels welcome, regardless of their arrival time.

•   If the sanctuary fills, there are chairs down the west hallway for overflow.

•   Monitor the narthex for any activity, since we don’t close the main doors, this is especially important.

AFTER THE SERVICE

•   Stand in the narthex and say goodbye to the worshippers as they go with your happy face.

•   Tidy up the sanctuary and collect any trash.

•   Extinguish the candles.

•   Put your name tag away.

COMMUNION SUNDAYS

•  Communion is the first Sunday of every month and is handled by the ushers. The participants remain in their seats.

•  The elements will be on a table in the narthex for guests to pick up on their way in.

•  Before the service begins, Jay will ask if anyone didn’t get their elements. One usher will have a basket with extras and will take them to the guests so the guests can stay in their seats.

IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY

•   The ushers are the designated helpers. Call 911 if needed. One usher should go to the parking lot to guide paramedics into the sanctuary.

•   Another usher should make sure the emergency responders can get through, clear the path if necessary.

If you find that you cannot make a Sunday, please find a replacement and let Ann know as soon as possible by email.

If it is a day or two before the service, contact by phone or text. 269-930-0693.

Your position is an important part of the service.
